Our post today tells firsthand a story of how much Benidorm has changed over the last five decades. Mr & Mrs Bennett married in October of 1963 and decided to spend their honeymoon in Benidorm; this would be their first time on an airplane for a holiday abroad. In those days, Alicante airport wasn’t built so they flew to Valencia airport. Mr. Bennett describes his experience of their arrival: “late evening landing in the dark and my one lasting memory of that was the warm aroma of oranges as we stepped from the plane” They tell us that most of their time was spent on the beach where “the local lads would come round selling ice cream, melon and drinks from a tray and bucket they would carry”, quite different from our beaches today. They hired a pedalo and went out to the Island. They also don’t recall the tall skyscrapers that now make Benidorm famous; in 1963 there weren’t any buildings inland apart from our famous bullring. Here is a picture of the happy couple enjoying a drink during that holiday. 50 years on and Mr & Mrs Bennett are currently celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at the RH Corona del Mar hotel in Benidorm.
We would like to thank them for sharing their story and for choosing RH Hotels….
